From the vegetable seller to the biggest online store, almost everyone in India now accepts UPI payments. You scan a QR code, enter an amount, type a PIN, and the money moves instantly from your bank account to the other person’s account. But while UPI is very convenient, many people still do not fully understand how it works and how to stay safe from fraud. This article explains both, in simple words.
What Is UPI?
UPI stands for Unified Payments Interface. It is a payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that allows you to transfer money between bank accounts instantly, at any time of the day or night, even on Sundays and holidays. Unlike old methods, there are no charges for normal personal transfers, and you do not need the other person’s bank account number or IFSC code. You only need their UPI ID, mobile number, or a QR code.
Popular apps that use UPI include Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and the mobile apps of almost all banks. All these apps work with each other, so a Google Pay user can easily pay a PhonePe user.
How to Make a UPI Payment
- Open your UPI app and tap on Scan QR Code or choose Pay to Contact / UPI ID.
- Scan the code or enter the UPI ID of the receiver.
- Check the name that appears on the screen. It should match the shop or person you are paying.
- Enter the correct amount carefully.
- Tap Pay and enter your UPI PIN.
- The payment is completed within seconds, and both sides get a confirmation.
Understand the UPI PIN Rule
This is the most important safety rule of UPI: you need to enter your UPI PIN only when you are PAYING money, never when you are RECEIVING money. Most UPI frauds happen because scammers convince people that they must enter a PIN or scan a QR code to receive a payment or a prize. That is always a lie. Receiving money needs no PIN, no QR scan, and no OTP. If anyone asks for these to “send you money”, they are trying to steal from you.
Common UPI Frauds and How to Avoid Them
- Fake buyer fraud: On selling platforms, a fake buyer sends a QR code and asks you to scan it and enter your PIN to “receive” the price. Remember the rule above — scanning and entering a PIN always means money LEAVES your account.
- Screen sharing fraud: A caller pretending to be from your bank asks you to install a screen-sharing app. Never install such apps on a stranger’s request and never share your screen while using a banking app.
- Fake customer care numbers: Scammers publish fake bank helpline numbers on the internet. Always take customer care numbers only from your bank’s official website or the back of your debit card.
- Refund and cashback lies: Messages saying you have won cashback or a lottery and must pay a small fee first are fraud. No real company works like this.
What About Daily Limits?
New UPI users are often surprised when a payment fails. Most banks set a daily transaction limit on UPI, and in the first 24 hours after you register or change your phone or SIM, the limit is usually much lower for your own safety. Limits and rules differ from bank to bank, so if a large payment fails, wait, try a smaller amount, or use net banking or a card for that one payment. This is a normal safety feature, not a problem with your account.
Golden Rules for Safe UPI Use
- Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, or card details with anyone, even someone claiming to be a bank officer. Banks never ask for these.
- Always verify the receiver’s name shown on the payment screen before paying.
- Set a strong lock (fingerprint or PIN) on your phone and on your payment apps.
- Check your bank statement regularly and report any unknown transaction immediately.
- Keep your payment apps updated from the official Play Store only. Never install payment apps from links sent by SMS or WhatsApp.
- If you think you have been cheated, call the national cyber fraud helpline 1930 immediately and also report it on the official cyber crime portal. Quick reporting increases the chance of getting your money back.
UPI is one of the best digital systems India has built, and it is completely safe when you understand its basic rules. Pay attention to the name on the screen, remember that receiving money never needs a PIN, and never act in a hurry when a stranger is on the phone. With these habits, you can enjoy the full convenience of UPI without any fear.
